Introduction
Netflix invests billions of dollars annually in content acquisition and production, yet not all titles deliver equal long-term value. While some films generate massive viewership at launch only to fade within weeks, others quietly sustain engagement for years. Understanding which types of content transition into “evergreen” catalog assets — and whether strategic decisions like global distribution amplify engagement — is critical for optimizing content investment.
This project analyzes Netflix Engagement Reports spanning late 2023 through mid-2025, covering over 36,000 movie records and 27,000 show records across four reporting periods. The dataset includes key variables such as hours_viewed, release_date, available_globally, and runtime, sourced from the TidyTuesday Netflix dataset.
We investigate two research questions:
- How do post-release “hype curves” differ across genres and languages? Do viewing hours follow a predictable decay? Which genres are most resilient over time?
- Is global availability associated with higher engagement? Does worldwide release independently predict stronger viewership after adjusting for exposure time?
Question 1: How do post-release hype curves differ across genres and languages?
Introduction
This section explores the longevity of Netflix films by tracking their “hype curves” — the trajectory of viewing hours as a title ages. Rather than relying on a single snapshot in time, we utilize longitudinal data spanning four reporting periods (from late 2023 to mid-2025). We aim to determine if viewing hours follow a predictable decay curve and whether certain officially designated genres or languages demonstrate higher resilience. This question is compelling because it shifts the focus from short-term hit-making to long-term catalog value, revealing what types of content successfully transition into “evergreen” assets that sustain subscriber retention.
Approach
To achieve a robust longitudinal analysis, we first align all movies onto a standardized temporal axis. We calculate periods_since_release by measuring the time gap between a film’s release date and the end of each reporting period. This allows us to compare a movie released in 2021 with one released in 2023 at the exact same point in their lifecycles.
To overcome the severe inaccuracies of keyword-based genre guessing, we implement an automated pipeline using the OMDb (Open Movie Database) API. We extract the official Genre and Language metadata for a sample of the top 500 most-watched movies across our dataset.
We use two line plots with LOESS smoothing to visualize the decay trajectories. The x-axis represents the 6-month periods since release, and the y-axis uses a log-transformed scale for hours viewed to handle the massive variance between blockbusters and standard titles. The first plot facets the decay curves by primary genre, while the second compares English vs. Non-English content.
Analysis
The following code processes the movie dataset, fetches genre/language metadata from OMDB, and builds the longitudinal dataset for analysis.

Discussion
The longitudinal analysis reveals a universal “hype curve” across all content, where viewership peaks during the first six months (Period 1) and sharply declines by Period 3. However, the long-term endurance of these titles is heavily dependent on their genre. Action and Comedy experience a rapid drop and settle into a flat baseline, suggesting they rely heavily on upfront novelty and marketing. In stark contrast, Animation demonstrates a unique resurgence between Periods 6 and 8. This measurable “second wind” confirms that family-oriented animated features possess high re-watchability, functioning as true evergreen assets that continually draw engagement years after their initial release.
When examining the language factor, a distinct disparity in long-term catalog value emerges. English-language content not only captures a higher initial peak but also settles into a remarkably stable, predictable baseline from Period 4 onwards, acting as the structural backbone of Netflix’s retention strategy. Conversely, Non-English titles suffer a steeper initial decay and exhibit extreme volatility in later periods, as evidenced by the drastically widening confidence intervals. This indicates that while the platform can successfully launch international hits, the long-term endurance of Non-English content is highly inconsistent and driven primarily by rare outliers rather than a reliable catalog floor.
Question 2: Is global availability associated with higher engagement?
Introduction
This section explores whether global availability is associated with higher engagement on Netflix. We focus on the relationship between available_globally and engagement metrics such as hours_viewed. Since older titles have had more time to accumulate engagement, we adjust for timing using release_date.
To reduce exposure bias, we calculate months_since_release and create a time-adjusted metric, normalized_hours, defined as hours viewed divided by months since release. Movies and shows are analyzed separately because their viewing structures differ: films are typically consumed in a single session, while series involve multiple episodes and longer engagement cycles.
This question is important because global distribution is a strategic decision. If globally available titles consistently perform better, it suggests that worldwide release plays a meaningful role in driving engagement.
Approach
We utilize two distinct visualization strategies. First, a faceted boxplot compares the distribution of time-adjusted engagement (normalized_hours) between globally available and regionally restricted titles. By faceting by content type, we can observe whether the effect of global availability differs between movies and shows. A log scale is essential because engagement levels are highly right-skewed.
Second, a scatter plot examines the relationship between runtime and normalized engagement, with color mapping based on available_globally. While the boxplot is superior for comparing group summaries, the scatter plot excels at showing patterns across continuous variables. This combination allows us to see both overall engagement differences and how global distribution relates to performance across runtime ranges.
Finally, we estimate the marginal effect of global availability using a regression model (normalized_hours ~ available_globally + runtime + months_since_release), fitted separately for movies and shows, to determine whether global availability independently predicts engagement after controlling for exposure time and content length.

Discussion
The boxplots show that globally available titles generally have higher normalized engagement than regionally restricted titles, although the difference is not extremely large. There is still substantial variation within each group. Some regional titles perform very well, but globally available titles appear more often among the higher values. The scatter plots also show wide variation in normalized engagement across runtime ranges. However, globally available titles tend to appear more frequently in the upper part of the distribution, suggesting that broader release may help increase overall exposure.
The regression results are consistent with what we observe in the plots. After controlling for runtime and months since release, global availability is still associated with higher normalized engagement. At the same time, this should not be interpreted as a direct causal effect. Titles released globally may also have stronger marketing, larger budgets, or broader appeal. Overall, global availability appears to be related to stronger engagement, but it is likely one of several contributing factors.
