An analysis of tree genuses in San Francisco

Julia Atkins, jea255

Interestingly, none of the subsections of neighborhoods show a significant portion of the overall most common genus, Platanus. The map to the left shows the distribution of those trees marked by orange dots. Upon closer inspection, many of these trees form lines along the divisions of the neighborhoods. These divisions are likely determined by major roads, lined with a lot of trees, which end up collected into the edges of various neighborhoods. This suggests that the neighborhood in which a tree is planted does not determine its genus. Rather, the overall geography, layout of the city and environmental surroundings seem to be more correlated.
