Neural Duplex System

Overview:

The neural duplex system was a final project for ECE4530: Analog Integrated Circuits. I worked in a group of three on this project.

Neural duplex is still a research topic. The neural duplex system enables the stimulation and measurement of nerual activity simultaneously. It can help improve clinical therapy of neurological disorders related to brains such as Parkinson's disease and depression.

The challenge of designing a neural duplex was that a large artifact was generated through the direct coupling of the simulation signal and recording probe. We needed to supress the artifact before passing signal through the amplifier so the circuit did not saturate.

In our neural duplex system, we had cancellation stage where we canceled the coupled artifact, and we had an amplifying stage where we amplified the neural activity signal. Our goal was to cancel the artifact so that it was less than 1V at the output. Running a simulation of our system, the supressed artifact was about 360mV. of The circuit design, simulation, and layout was done in Cadence.
