Data 1

Introduction and data

  • Identify the source of the data.

    • Polling done by Ipsos for FiveThirtyEight, using Ipsos’s KnowledgePanel, a probability-based online panel that is recruited to be representative of the U.S. population.
  • State when and how it was originally collected (by the original data curator, not necessarily how you found the data).

    • The poll was conducted from Sept. 15 to Sept. 25 among a sample of U.S. citizens that oversampled young, Black and Hispanic respondents, with 8,327 respondents, and was weighted according to general population benchmarks for U.S. citizens from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey March 2019 Supplement. There does not seem to be any ethical concerns with the data.
  • Write a brief description of the observations.

    • This data set is a survey conducted that asks respondents 29 questions, allowing them to respond on a scale of 1-4 agreeing or disagreeing with them. The questions concern everything from religion, trust, political systems, to individual ideology to fully flesh out values of those surveyed. Age, Gender, Education, Race, Income, and Weight are the only standalone survey responses present in the dataframe.

Research question

    • 1) How do race, education, and income affect voting decisions?

    • 2) Are there any correlation in race, education, and income and voting decisions?

  • A description of the research topic along with a concise statement of your hypotheses on this topic.

    • This research will help to illustrate voting habits by demographics. A hypothesis is that individuals who have completed some level of college are more likely to vote compared to those who did not complete any amount of college?
  • Identify the types of variables in your research question. Categorical? Quantitative?

    • There will be a mix of categorical and quantitative variables. Variables like race are categorical while variables like income are quantitative.

Introduction and data

  • Identify the source of the data.

    • The data was collected from Marvel Wikia and DC Wikia. (Note: The sites are fan-maintained so as with any data of this nature, take it with the standard caveat that it’s only as good as the people updating it.)
  • State when and how it was originally collected (by the original data curator, not necessarily how you found the data).

    • The data was scraped and pulled from the Marvel and DC Wikia databases by the original curator. Characters of interests were scraped on August 24, 2014. Appearance counts were scraped on September 2, 2014, and the month and year of the first issue each character appeared in was pulled on October 6, 2014. There do not seem to be any ethical concerns with the data.
  • Write a brief description of the observations.

    • The data set contains character lists from the two mainstream universes of different publishers, alongside categories of interest such as such as sex, character morale, identity statuses, etc. The Wikias count the number of appearances of each character in the comic books they have in their databases, so appearance counts for 6,541 of the DC characters and 15,280 Marvel characters were scraped. Also, the month and year of the first issue 6,827 DC characters and 15,561 Marvel characters appeared in were scraped.

    • 1) How has gender representation in comic books changed over time?

    • 2) How has character diversity in comic books changed over time?

  • A description of the research topic along with a concise statement of your hypotheses on this topic.

    • This research topic will help explore the topic of gender representation in the mass media form, comic books, specifically pertaining to characters. A possible hypothesis is that historically, representation of characters outside the male spectrum have been low but have increased over time.
  • Identify the types of variables in your research question. Categorical? Quantitative?

    • Both categorical and quantitative variable types are present such as sex/gender being categorical, and first appearances and counts of characters being quantitative.

    • This data was collected by Saif Uddin, and was uploaded in his Kaggle post. Here is the url for his post: “https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/saife245/english-premier-league”.
  • State when and how it was originally collected (by the original data curator, not necessarily how you found the data).

    • The author updates this data annually from “http://football-data.co.uk”.
  • Write a brief description of the observations.

    • While what has been collected each year is very different, it generally collects records of Premier League matches. The information includes the teams participating, who the away and home teams were, the time and date of the match, the name of the referee, and many other information related to the match.

Research question

  • A well formulated research question. (You may include more than one research question if you want to receive feedback on different ideas for your project. However, one per data set is required.)
    • 1) Does referees have an impact on the result of the match?

    • 2) How has implementation of VAR impact the results of the matches?

  • A description of the research topic along with a concise statement of your hypotheses on this topic.
    • This research will help us understand the impact of subjective views of referees to the game. Potential hypothesis could be “referees have preference for the team and increase the winning rate of such teams.”
  • Identify the types of variables in your research question. Categorical? Quantitative?
    • Implementation of both categorical and quantitative data will be necessary. We will need to study more about each referee by how strict they are in calling fouls, giving yellow or red cards, and adding extension times. Then, we must compare this to a quantitative variable such as the average winning rate of the club vs that of when a specific referees are in charge.
