Characteristics of Billionaires

Investigating patterns in the age, gender, region, and inheritance of the world’s billionaires

Project Abstract:

This project analyzes data on the world’s billionaires in 2014, investigating patterns in their age and gender demographics and observing any inequities. The data set used is from the CORGIS Dataset Project and includes information on billionaires’ name, age, gender, region, age_range, and inheritance. The data is cleaned and relevant variables are selected for analysis.

The analysis includes summary statistics and visualizations, revealing clear inequities among the demographics of billionaires. Two models are created to answer the research questions related to the number of billionaires and percentage of billionaires with inheritance based on age, gender, and region.

Through hypothesis tests, gender-based disparities in extreme wealth accumulation are found, but not age-based differences. The study suggests that further research is needed to explore the sociological and economic factors behind gender-based inequalities among billionaires, and to investigate changes in patterns of characteristics of billionaires over time.

Limitations of the study include missing data between 1996, 2001, and 2014, which could limit the depth and accuracy of the analysis, and the 2014 data set may not be representative of all billionaires that year. Despite these limitations, the project acknowledges the valuable contributions of the CORGIS Dataset Project, Professor Soltoff and the course staff, and online resources that enabled the research.

In conclusion, this project is a thorough investigation into the characteristics of billionaires and the potential inequities among different demographics, and provides insight into the need for further research on the topic.
