Abstract

This report researches the relationship between song characteristics (e.g. tempo, length, and loudness) and song popularity and whether or not certain song characteristics are more or less influential in this respect. We are using data from The Million Song Dataset, which was created in 2011. It contains information on artists (e.g. location, demographics, and popularity) and information on the artists’ respective songs (e.g. title, year, length, tempo, BPM, etc.).

Specifically, the research question we are looking to answer is “how do song characteristics like loudness, tempo, or length relate to song popularity (as measured by song_hotttnesss)?”
