INFO 2950 Project

This project investigates the factors behind a song’s popularity using the Million Song Dataset from the project collaboration between the Echo Nest and LabROSA, such as popularity levels of artists and various other attributes.

We looked into the factors artist popularity, song release year, song tempo, and song genre, and used methods such as creating visualizations and conducting hypothesis tests to investigate the factors behind a song’s popularity.

After conducting statistical analysis on the data, we concluded that an artist’s popularity and the creation of digital distribution of songs were significant factors in impacting the popularity of songs. This study contributes to the understanding of the music industry and its trends, and provides insights for artists, producers, and music streaming platforms.
