Chapter 33 Surveillance Activity Visualization

The Surveillance Activity Visualization allows you to show a map of your administrative area with the current progress towards surveillance goals based on entries in the Annual Surveillance data collection. This map will be updated automatically each time it is viewed to reflect current surveillance activity based on sample data stored in the Warehouse.

33.1 Creating a Surveillance Activity Visualization

To create a Surveillance Activity Visualization, complete the following steps:

  • Title (required): Create a title for your visualization to help you keep track of your visualizations. It will appear in the visualization dashboard, so it should be both descriptive and concise. You may use characters, numbers, and symbols. For example: Surveillance activity 2022-23.

  • Comments: Add additional comments for future reference.

  • Display: These options control how visualizations are presented in the visualization dashboard.

    • Weight is used to order visualizations. Visualizations with lower weight values will be presented in the dashboard above those with higher weight values. This value defaults to 9999 (the lowest position on menus).

    • Display on visualization dashboard for all users is used to control whether non-administrative users should be shown this visualization. If you want all users to be able to view this visualization, check the box. If you would prefer that this visualization be available only to Provider Administrators in your agency, do not check this box. This value defaults to un-selected, so must be selected if you want others to see this visualization.

    • Tag category is used to display the visualization under the selected heading on the dashboard. See the section under Introducing Visualizations.

    • If provided, the Thumbnail will be used as the preview image of the visualization on the dashboard.

  • Visualization input (required): Select from the drop-down menu which Annual Surveillance plan you wish to show in this visualization. Typically, this visualization will be for the upcoming/current season-year, but if you have annual surveillance plans for previous years, this input will allow you to visualize your achievement toward your previous surveillance goals in that season-year (for example, did we meet our surveillance goals last year?).

Click OK to create the visualization.

33.2 Viewing the Surveillance Activity Visualization

Select the thumbnail from the Visualizations dashboard. A map showing current surveillance activity by sub-administrative area will appear. You can filter what shows on the map by selecting sub-administrative area, agency management unit, and/or surveillance category using the dropdown lists above the map.

Tables with details on surveillance activity points and sample results by sub-administrative area and disease management area can be accessed below the map. In addition, the sample weights associated with the Annual Surveillance plan selected in the creation of the Visualization can be accessed below the map.

Changes to inputs for the visualization can be made by clicking on the edit icon (pencil) at the top right of the visualization. The visualization will be automatically updated.
